Hello Everyone, and Happy May!

It’s been a strange spring. In March we had a week of summer, and today is beautiful, but something like 10 degrees below the normal temperature. It’s hard to know what to wear as we walk out the door in the morning!

May, it’s the beginning of the end of the school year. Most of you know I work in a couple of Elementary Schools and I noticed something interesting during our “summer” days in March. The kids moved into summer mode. It was the usual behaviour that we notice in June! Teachers were saying things like “we’re almost done”, and all I could think of, was really? We had 3 months to go. It’s easy, when you are almost at the finish line, to end too soon. Athletes have to contend with this. Do you run the race but let up before it’s over? No, they are supposed to run at their very highest capacity all the way through the finish line. I remember playing in tennis tournaments. Occasionally I would be far ahead of my opponent and decide to put out less energy. You can likely guess what happenned. Things shifted quickly, and perhaps I won, but by a nerve wracking margin, or sometimes I lost a match that appeared to be a given.

I want to encourage you all to finish strong! Especially those of you near the end of your programs. Don’t let a couple of warm days turn off your motivation to do well, all the way to the end. Remember that many races are won in the very last few seconds. Don’t forget that your education is a gift, for YOU!

Rob’s Music Review – May 2012

NEEDTOBREATHE is special within the world of Christian music, for a few reasons. Firstly, their sound is unique within a sea of pop-modern Worship/Rock albums with their influences clearly leaning to the folk side of the spectrum. Secondly, their song writing is incredibly mature, philosophical, and profound which also sets them apart in the Christian genre. And thirdly, their proliferation as artists has been widespread, taking after such bands as Switchfoot and Relient K, as they have managed to not only top Christian charts but mainstream rock/pop charts as well. It takes a certain amount of talent to be able to write lyrics that reflect and point to their faith and God, yet manage to be accessible to all. Perhaps one of their most poetic and beautiful songs, “A Place Only You Can Go” is a hauntingly sad love song that speaks of the special place in us that only Love can go. Their song “Keep Your Eyes Open” is another brilliantly catchy and inspiring song, along with “White Fences” or the chilling “Devil’s Been Talkin’ ” – a mandolin driven, southern country/folk feel anthem. If you love bands like Mumford and Sons or Ben Howard then you will fall easily for NEEDTOBREATHE’s newest release.

Winter Retreat 2012

This is a reminder that the Winter retreat is almost upon us. If you haven’t already registered, please do so today! The retreat will be held in the usual place at New Life Camp in Durham, Ontario on the third weekend in February (17th-19th). This year’s theme is “Discipleship Explored – What can we learn from Philippians?” Complete the registration form and send it to Lynn Lawrence along with the $85.00 fee.

Hello to you all,

It is that time of year again! Send in your Camp forms now and Friends of Camp Connections will pay $120 of your camp tuition fee! All you have to do is complete your application and mail it to me before February 15th. First time campers will have a little longer to take advantage of the reduced price but why wait?! Camp 2012 is going to be another amazing camp experience! Do you have a friend that you think would enjoy spending a week at camp? Talk to them about camp and tell them why you love coming back every year! Invite them along and make sure they take advantage of the Friends of camp Connections scholarship too!

Winter retreat time!

This is a reminder that the February retreat is coming up soon. Time to register! The retreat will be held in the usual place at New Life Camp in Durham, Ontario on the third weekend in February (17th-19th). This year’s theme will be announced shortly, but while you’re waiting, complete the registration form (insert hyperlink here) and send it to Lynn along with the $85.00 fee. Please send us your forms quickly! We need at least 12 registrations before January 31, 2012 in order for this event to take place.
