Scuba says: “Peddling Kilometres!”

  • Here is an update from Mark regarding July’s FOCC fund raiser.  Great job Karl, Mark and all the riders

How many km’s did you Peddle!?
Friends of Camp Connections (FOCC) is a registered Canadian charity that was founded in 2002 with a mandate to support Christian camps and to expose camp participants to the Christian life.  The charity strives to facilitate the spiritual, physical and social development of participants by providing financial support for programs such as the one run annually by Camp Connections in Lanark Ontario in Eastern Canada.

Among other initiatives FOCC offers a $120 scholarship per week to any first time campers who choose to go to Camp Connections.  The scholarship is also extended to those returning campers who register by the early registration date in mid February.  This contribution, which amounts to more than 25% of the cost of a week at Camp, ensures that the price of a week at Camp Connections is never prohibitive.  FOCC also provides more comprehensive scholarships subject to an application process in which campers and/or parents communicate need and desire.

This summer FOCC took on a new and exciting adventure as part of its ongoing effort to raise funds.  On July 2nd Peddling km’s kicked off as 6 riders mounted their bicycles on Parliament Hill in Canada’s Capital.  They headed for Camp Connections’ home office in Montreal where Camp directors Dennis and Lynn Lawrence would welcome them with open arms and a cold drink.  The two day, 170km ride from Ottawa to Montreal took the team through beautiful Eastern Ontario testing the riders physical and mental endurance.  Blessed with great weather all weekend, riders learned cycling etiquette, shared touring tips, learned to cycle in a straight line while laughing, practiced riding in a pelaton and drafting and sympathized with each other when their rear ends got sore.

Thanks to an incredible effort by riders who peddled their km and gained pledges prior to the event the team was earning $24.12 for every km that they rode.  By the end of the trip more than $4000 had been raised by just 6 riders. Next year the event will have a new look and even more participants.  More than 15 riders have already signed up to participate in the second annual peddling km’s event!

So the question is this…Are you ready for a challenge!?  This is your chance!  Dust off your bicycle and come and join the team in 2012 for the two day trip of a lifetime.  On June 16th and 17th ride from Ottawa to Montreal in support of Camp Connections.  Take the opportunity to get some exercise and share a great weekend outdoors!  Visit http://camp-connections.org/ for more information leading up to the event or get a free subscription to the eConnect news letter by sending a request to:info@CampConnections.org

    Sincerely,

    Mark Yandt

About The Author

"Scuba" Steve Symonds is an important member of our camp team. Involved in work at camps since the early 1970s, Stephen brings an important message of recovery and hope in Jesus Christ. As a young man going through a very difficult period of his life, God reminded Stephen of some simple messages he had heard at camp: the beautiful truths of John 3:16, and its lyrical counterpart, "Jesus Loves Me." As a result, Stephen is deeply aware of the potential impact of a week at camp: even if that impact comes many years later. Stephen has a great love of learning, a special interest in astronomy, and an impressive ability in waterskiing. He is also one of our resident photographers and "techies"!
