Deas Vail – Birds and Cages
Deas Vail (meaning “Humble Servant of God”) is an incredible find. Perhaps identified musically as Indie Piano Rock, Deas Vail is known for its incredible song writing, vocal work and melodies. Recently on tour with Owl City and lights, Deas Vail’s third album, “Birds And Cages”, is a thematic album which is simply infectious. Song after song on the album you are surprised by their lyrics and melodies, however, the most iconic aspect of the band is the voice of lead singer Wes Baylock. Not only does he sing flawlessly, his range allows him to explore regions of music that most male leads cannot. The landmark songs on this album are “The Things You Were” which showcases the bands incredible vocal work and melodic arrangements, as well as their single “Excuses”, “Birds” which features Relient K’s Matt Thiessen towards the end of the song, the remarkably catchy and musically married songs “Tell Me” and “Dance in Perfect Time” which seem to have been written as one song however morphed into two, and countless others. It is rare to find an album that each song is as catchy as the previous, but “Birds and Cages” does this heroically. If you enjoy bands like The Myriad, Arcade Fire, Kings of Leon, Owl City, and are perhaps looking for a more serious version of Relient K, I would sincerely recommend trying out Deas Vail
